Werner Conrad Oswald Christian Sell

Werner Conrad Oswald Christian Sell was born March 25, 1928, on the family farm in Bremer County, son of Conrad and Martha (Mundfrom) Sell. He attended school in Tripoli through high school. Following graduation, Werner went to work for his sister and brother-in-law in their Jack Spratt Grocery Stores as a bookkeeper.

In 1950, he enlisted into the United States Army serving in the Korean Conflict. Following an honorable discharge, he worked for the United States Postal Service, then in the offices at Westinghouse Corporation. Werner was a very self-disciplined man and continued his military workouts for the rest of his life.

Following retirement, he hiked and climbed on his travels throughout the United States and the world. Werner visited many countries, including Germany, Russia and Norway – some multiple times. He was an avid reader and historian and collected every issue of National Geographic from 1912. Werner also loved and was very gifted at restoring antiques. He also enjoyed classical music and was a lifetime member of the Waterloo Symphony.

Werner passed away on Thursday, March 1, 2018, at the Stanard Family Assisted Living in Cedar Falls, Iowa, just 24 days prior to his 90th birthday. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sisters, Lydia, Agnes, Rosetta, Maria, and Alma.

Werner is survived by his nieces: Carolana (Frank) Magsamen of Waterloo; Lois Ann Vaughn of Charlotte, NC; Karla Kay Morgan of Oregon; Shirley Ann Kappel of Waterloo; and Arvella Brinyark of Missouri; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
