Obituary for Darlene A. McDonald

Darlene A. McDonald, 84, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Friday, February 16, at UnityPoint Health-Allen Hospital, in Warterloo. She was born June 24, 1933, in Gilbertville, Iowa, the daughter of Lloyd and Florence Weber McDonald.

Darlene graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Gilbertville, Iowa, in 1951. In the summer of 1952, she entered the convent, joining the School Sisters of Notre Dame in Mankato, Minnesota. In the ensuing years, she received a BA from St. Catherine University and her MA from Notre Dame University. Darlene taught for 38 years throughout Iowa and Minnesota. She spent the last 19 years in AEA7, special education, working with students with multiple disabilities. Following retirement, Darlene continued to tutor, working with her favorite student, Matthew.

Darlene loved to travel and her dear friend, Jackie frequently joined in her adventures. They spent a month driving through Germany and Italy, pausing in Rome to tour the Vatican and joining an audience with the Pope. Another trip included a month in Ireland and many trips to California, Texas and Mexico.

While living at the Kingswood Condos, Darlene enjoyed the fun and convenience of having Paul and Arlene and Jackie “just over the berm” and Liz and her beloved dog, Toby, in the condo upstairs. Toby knew to expect those twice a day visits and waited at the door for Darlene.

Darlene is survived by her twin sister, Arlene (Paul) Jaehrling of Waterloo; a brother-in-law Mike McCarville; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special friend Jackie Dolan.

Preceded in death by her parents; by three sisters: Joan (Neal) Sloan, Judy McCarville, and infant sister Jean; and by a niece, Jan Jaehrling.

Services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, at Queen of Peace Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary.
