John W. Sabbath

December 31, 1931 - February 9, 2018

John W. Sabbath, 86, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, died Friday, February 9, 2018, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, Iowa.

He was born December 31, 1931, in Muscatine, Iowa, the son of Walter Henry John and Marie (Grunder) Sabbath. John was married in 1954. He was a graduate of Muscatine High School and attended Muscatine Community College. John graduated from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois and the University of Iowa College of Law, obtaining a Juris Doctor Law Degree in 1959.

He served in Europe from 1955-1956 in the U.S. Army Special Services, Red Diamond Army Choir, and toured Germany. John practiced law until retirement in 2017 from Reed, Merner & Sabbath Law Firm in Cedar Falls. He was a member of the Blackhawk County Bar Association, where he was President from 1984-1985, and the Iowa State and American Bar Association for over 55 years.

John was also was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls; the UNI Panther Scholarship Club; a life member of the Cedar Falls Historical Society, and The Hearst Center for Arts in Cedar Falls.

John is survived by his daughter, Cindy L. Horbochuk, of Portland, Oregon; two sons, Jeffrey W. (Sherrie) Sabbath of Evergreen Park, Illinois and J. Michael (Gloria) Sabbath of Arlington Heights, Illinois, and seven grandchildren, Joy Horbochuk, Andrew Horbochuk, Emily Sabbath-Nichols, Natalie Sabbath, Walter Sabbath, Nicole Marquez and Alec Michael Sabbath.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Charles J. Sabbath, and his sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Miller.

Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 17, 2018, at Nazareth Lutheran Church, with burial at Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice. Condolences may be left at www.DahlFuneralHome.com.
