Mary Bernadette “Bernie” McCoy (1921-2018)

CEDAR FALLS – Mary Bernadette “Bernie” McCoy, 96, of Cedar Falls died Friday, January 19, 2018 at the Western Home Communities Windhaven.

She was born April 23, 1921 in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, daughter of William and Mary Frances (Ryan) McCormick. She married John T. McCoy, M.D. on July 14, 1948 in Madison, Wisconsin. He preceded her in death on December 20, 2001.

She graduated from Soldiers Grove High School (Wisconsin) in 1939 and from St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing (Wisconsin) in 1942. She was employed at the University of Wisconsin General Hospital as a Registered Nurse for seven years. She was a member of the Black Hawk County Medical Auxiliary, Sartori Hospital Auxiliary, and past president of the Cedar Falls Nurse’s Club. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and volunteered her services as a part time school nurse for Columbus High school.

Survived by: two sons, John T. (Margaret) McCoy of Waterloo and William E. (Cynthia) McCoy of Ankeny; a daughter, Mary F. (Terence) Marholz of Kansas City, MO; five grandchildren: Paul, Anna, Edward, Michael, and Mary McCoy; one great grandchild, Max McCoy; three sisters, Helen Carlin and Anastasia Koechling of St. Francis, WI, and Wilfrieda O’Donaghue of Milwaukee, WI; three sisters-in-law, Evelyn McCormick and Janet McCormick of Soldiers Grove, WI, and Marcella McCormick of Waverly; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by: five brothers, Walter, Paul, Michael, Bernard, and John McCormick; three nephews, Jerome and James McCormick and John Carlin; two nieces, Paula and Jeanette McCormick; and one great niece, Michelle McCormick.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 22 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Cedar Falls, with burial in Calvary Cemetery, Waterloo. Visitation from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21 at Richardson Funeral Service where there will be a 3 p.m. Rosary. Visitation also for one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the church, Cedar Valley Catholic Schools, Northeast Iowa Food Bank, or Western Home Foundation.
