Biography--

LeRoy G. Powells, age 86, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at UnityPoint Allen Hospital.

He was born January 25, 1931 in Waterloo, the son of John Gibson and Adeline (Moore) Powells. LeRoy was a graduate of Waterloo West High School and he attended Gates Business College and Iowa State Teacher’s College. He was a US Army Veteran serving during the Korean Conflict in Germany.

LeRoy was united in marriage with Rosie Lee Green on June 10, 1951 at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. They were later divorced. He married Ida P. Dixon in 1962 at St. Paul, MN. They were later divorced.

LeRoy worked as an accountant in Minnesota and then was employed at Rath Packing Co. for many years. He was a member of Payne AME Church where he served as an usher and sang in the men’s chorus. LeRoy also was a Boy Scout volunteer.

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Jennings of Atlanta, GA; four grandchildren, Chandary Banks, Denise Smith, Natasha Haney and Philip Jennings; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Beatrice Reynolds of Waterloo; a brother, Cleve (Betty) Nolan, Jr. of Milwaukee, WI; six nieces; eight nephews; 51 great nieces and nephews; 38 great-great nieces and nephews; 11 great-great-great nieces and nephews; special friends, Rosie Kimbrough and her children of Waterloo; Floyd Rubendall of Honolulu, HI; his VA nurse Rhonda Peradi; his senior companion, Loretta Powers and many members of the Waterloo Police and Fire Departments.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Harry Robinson, Jr.; four sisters, Gladys Thomas, Cathleen Culp, Jaquline Roberts and Ruth Nolan Brown; two nephews, Stacy Robinson and ShonDell Nolan and two nieces, Kim Farr and Vorotta Johnson.
