CEDAR FALLS -- Police have identified three young Waterloo men who died in a Friday night car accident in Cedar Falls.

Elijah James Showalter, 20, of 226 Randolph St., Daniel James Delagardelle, 21, of 427 Progress Ave.; and Brady J. Hagenstein, 16, of 507 Magnolia Parkway, were all pronounced dead on the scene following the collision on Viking Road.

Police were called to the accident around 5:05 p.m. Friday near the intersection of Viking Road and Winterberry Drive, near BioLife Plasma Services, in what is often a heavily trafficked commercial area.

Witness accounts and physical evidence indicate a SUV traveling eastbound on Viking was struck by a westbound sedan.

Police said the sedan was traveling at a high rate of speed, lost control and crossed the center line, striking the SUV head-on. The men receiving fatal injuries were ejected from the vehicle. Police have not said he was the driver of the sedan.

The crash tore the car in two and scattered debris across a large portion of the road. Law enforcement officers shut down Viking Road, channeling heavy traffic through the commercial area in front of Walmart and Hobby Lobby.

Ronald Harmon, 55, and Stacy Harmon, 44, both of 3020 Lovejoy Drive, and their 9-year-old daughter were in the SUV driven by Stacy. They received non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Cedar Falls Safety Services Director Jeff Olson said an officer had observed the vehicle speeding near the intersection of Viking Road and Cedar Heights Drive and turned to around to attempt a traffic stop. That officer came upon the collision at the top of a hill near Winterberry.

The crash remains under investigation.
