Obituary for Raymond "Gene" Doyle

CEDAR FALLS, IOWA – Raymond “Gene” Doyle, 77, of Cedar Falls died Sunday, January 14, 2018 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, Iowa.

He was born November 30, 1940, in Marshalltown, Iowa, son of Joseph and Gertrude (Duffy) Doyle. He married Sandra Zenor on August 24, 1959 in Toledo, Iowa.

Gene graduated from Toledo High School and Iowa State Teachers College (UNI), where he played football from 1958 to 1962. He taught History and Driver’s Education and coached at Keota High School for four years; Dubuque Senior for eight years; and then at Cedar Falls High School from 1974 until retiring from teaching in 2000. While at CFHS he coached track, wrestling and football, retiring from coaching in 2014. His wrestling team won multiple state championships in the 1990’s, receiving the Iowa Wrestling Association Coach of the Year award in 1992 and the National Wrestling Association Iowa Coach of the Year in 1996.

As an assistant football coach, he helped lead Cedar Falls High School to 25 state playoff appearances including five championship games. He was inducted into both the Iowa High School Wrestling (2012) and National Wrestling (2011) Hall of Fames. The football team he played on at UNI was inducted to the UNI Hall of Fame in 2015.

Survived by: his wife; four sons, Christopher (Jackie) and Patrick (Tami) of Cedar Falls, Michael of Chisago City, MN, and Matthew (Lisa) of Brentwood, TN; three daughters, Shelly (Shawn) Meighan of Des Moines, Laurie (John) Lynch of East Dubuque, IL, and Tracy (Keith) Carman of Cedar Falls; 24 grandchildren; a brother, Mark (Alice) Doyle of Cedar Rapids; and two sisters, Sandy (Dennis) Zmolek of Marshalltown and Mary Doyle of Santa Barbara, CA.

Preceded in death by: his parents; two brothers, Dick and Joe Doyle; and a grandson, Spencer Lynch.

Services: 11:00 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick Catholic Church with burial in Fairview Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Richardson Funeral Service and also for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the church or the Cedar Falls AMVETS Post#49.

He and Sandy loved to travel and visit family and grandchildren. He was a humble man with a strong quiet presence.
