John R. Cole

March 27, 1935 - January 6, 2018

John R. Cole 82, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Saturday January 6, at Friendship Village-Lakeview Landing. John was born March 27, 1935, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the son of Stephen and Kathleen Cullen Cole. He married Janice Jacobson 1966. She died in January 1999.

John retired in 1997 from John Deere after 23 years of employment. He was also a union steward while he was employed with John Deere. He was an Eagle Scout and a member of The Order of the Arrow. He was also a lifetime member of the Cedar Falls AMVETS.

Survived by: a special friend, Vera Rogers of Waterloo, her extended family; a stepson, Stephen (Linda Close) Strassburg of Waterloo; two stepdaughters, Staci (Bob) Leatherman of San Antonio, Texas and Stefanie (Steve) Johnson of Holland, Pa.; a brother, Jerry (Elda) Cole of Cedar Falls; a sister, Mary (Jim) DeBoom; five granddaughters, Jessica Zabel, Jo Marie Leatherman, Amy Leatherman, Moriah Johnson, and Elisa Johnson; and a great-granddaughter, Ava Zabel.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday January 12, at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral
Service on West Ridgeway. A visitation will occur from 9:00-10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

John was a skilled fisherman who enjoyed sharing his tricks and a lifelong Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs fan. He loved road trips, especially in recent years to Panama City Beach to spend winters with snowbird friends.
