Ernest "Pokey Pete" Petersen

April 4, 1925 - December 24, 2017

Cedar Falls, Iowa – Ernest “Pokey Pete” Petersen, age 92, of Cedar Falls, died Sunday, December 24, 2017 at Stanard Family Assisted Living of Western Home Communities.

He was born April 4, 1925 in Cedar Falls, the son of Adolph and Martha (Keller) Petersen. He graduated from Osage High School in 1943. He served in the US Navy from 1943-1946. On March 9, 1947, he married Arlene Schulz in Nashua, they later divorced.

On April 16, 1960 he married Juanita (Conery) Metzger in Waterloo. She preceded him in death on February 20, 2007. He worked as a custodian at Orchard Hill School, working for the Cedar Falls School District.

Survived by: a brother, Frederick of Gulfport, MS; a sister, Alice of Cedar Falls; 6 children, Sharon Petersen of Kansas City, MO, Janet (Jerry) Somers of Holt, MO, Jerry Petersen, Linda Sunseri of Santa Fe, NM, Jim Petersen of Waterloo, and Kathy Lavanz of Waterloo; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: two brothers, Elvin and Donald.

A memorial gathering of friends and family will be from 4-6pm Friday, December 29 at Richardson Funeral Service, Cedar Falls.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Salvation Army or Western Home Communities.

For over 40 years, Pokey Pete gave rides on his little red train to the children of NE Iowa.
