Obituary for Steven A. Van Deest

WATERLOO, IOWA - Steven A. Van Deest, 56, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, September 19, at his home.

He was born December 20, 1960, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the son of Bernard and Carol (Rogers) Van Deest. He married Linette Rogers and they later divorced.

He graduated from Maquoketa Valley High School and earned his Associate degree in Agri-Business from Hawkeye Tech in Waterloo. He then earned his BA in Social Work from the University of Northern Iowa.

Steven participated in RAGBRI 13 times, enjoyed farming, loved his 1970 Chevelle and spending time with family and friends. Even though he was paralyzed in an accident in 1980, he never let that limit him; he always created ways to be as independent as he could be.

Survived by: his mother, Carol Hoeweler of Waterloo; two sisters, Carla (Kevin) Leyen of Reinbeck and Colleen Starnes of Kyle, TX; five nieces: Brooke (Tyler) Rice, Rachael (Shawn) Selmeski, Nicole (Andy) Knapp, Audrey Leyen, and Hannah Starnes; and a nephew, Cameron Starnes.

Preceded in death by: his father, step-father, Harold Hoeweler; and special friend, Lynne Lusson.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 25, at Prairie Lakes Church in Cedar Falls with burial in Lincoln Township Cemetery, rural Grundy Center. Visitation from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Richardson Funeral Service and also for one hour prior to services Monday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
