Obituary for Jean Margaret Leonard

CEDAR FALLS, IOWA – Jean Margaret Leonard, 92, of Cedar Falls, died Saturday, August 12, 2017 at the Western Home Communities Elizabeth E. Martin Health Center.

She was born June 4, 1925, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, daughter of Joseph and Nellie McComb Wiswell. She married Edward Leonard on June 28, 1947 in Darien, Connecticut.

She graduated from Germantown High School in Philadelphia in 1943. She earned her BA in Home Economics in 1974 and her Masters in 1990, both from the University of Northern Iowa. She was employed as a Home Economist at Rath Packing Company and later employed in the food labs in the Family and Consumer Science program at UNI, retiring in 1990. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church.

Survived by: her husband of Cedar Falls; her children: Carol (Chad) Jackson of London, KY, Jane (Robert) Nelson of Cedar Falls, Tom (Gina) Leonard of New Hampton, IA, Fran (Dan) Venter of Johnston, IA, Mary Hover of Cedar Falls, Sue (Dave) Watters of Cedar Falls, and Lois Greene of Emmetsburg, IA; son-in-law, Vince Handeland of Boone, IA; 22 grandchildren; and 25 great grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: a daughter, Patty Handeland; and a sister, Nancy Walker.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 18, at St. Patrick Catholic Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, August 17, at Richardson Funeral Service, Cedar Falls, where there will be a 4 p.m. Rosary.
