Obituary for Doris Hogan

Doris Hogan, 85, of Waterloo, died Saturday, August 5, at Ravenwood Specialty Care after a long illness.

She was born August 16, 1931, in Waterloo, daughter of Edward and Anna Weber. She married Bernard G. Hogan on October 11, 1952, in Waterloo, and together they raised eight children.

She was a loving, devoted wife and mother who could be counted on to look after her friends and family and always put their needs ahead of her own. She had a keen wit and generous, giving spirit that served as a bright example for everyone she met, and she was always quick with a supportive smile whenever it was needed. She believed in volunteering to help others and donating to charity, and she never wavered in her faith, even when she faced some of life’s most devastating challenges.

At home, she prided herself on her wide-ranging baking talents, which prompted people far and wide to make special requests for everything from peanut brittle to no-bake cookies. She loved games and sports, most notably college basketball, and she was unwavering in supporting her beloved Duke, Notre Dame and, of course, the Iowa Hawkeyes. She was a formidable opponent in both Bridge and Trivial Pursuit.

Doris is survived by daughter Mary Anne Hogan of San Diego, CA; son and daughter-in-law Brian and Debbie Hogan of Waterloo; son Joseph Hogan and his partner, Vicki Vanderhoff, of San Diego, CA; son and daughter-in-law David and Sue Hogan of Escondido, CA; daughter Jane Roethler of San Diego, CA; daughter and son-in-law Ellen and Paul Bachand of Woonsocket, RI; and son John Hogan of New York City, NY; as well as 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

She is also survived by so many other relatives very dear to her heart, especially her cherished nieces and nephews Marilyn and Dick Weber and Sharon and Kevin O'Connor, all of Waterloo.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Hogan; a son Stephen M. Hogan; daughter-in-law Mary Fay Hogan; two sisters, LeRita Weber and Mary Jane O’Connor; two brothers, Vernon Weber and infant brother John Edward Weber.
The family would like to thank Phyllis Tjabring and Mary Billerbeck for their care and support of Doris as she faced her illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 11, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with entombment in the Mt. Olivet Columnbaruim. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, August 10, at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street with a rosary at 4 p. m. Visitation will continue at the church for an hour before services on Friday.
