Phyllis Ver Ploeg

September 20, 1941 - July 28, 2017

Phyllis Ver Ploeg, age 75, passed away on the 28th of July, 2017, at the NewAldaya Lifescapes Long Term Care Facility in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

She was born September 20, 1941, the daughter of Elton and Margaret (Van Zante) Ver Ploeg, on the parental farm, north of Pella, Iowa, and moved into town upon the death of her father, at the age of thirteen. Phyllis was a lifetime resident of Iowa. She graduated from Pella Public High School, Pella, Iowa, in 1960, and went on to receive her teaching degree from Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa, in 1964, and her Masters Degree from the University of Northern Iowa, in 1983.

Phyllis was a dedicated High School Co-Ed Athletic Director, serving two years in Waterloo, Iowa, and at Cedar Falls High School, Cedar Falls, Iowa, for 36 years; where she retired in 2002. Phyllis made Profession of her Faith in Christ as a young teenager at the First Reformed Church, Pella, Iowa.

Phyllis was blessed by her church, Nazareth Evangelical Lutheran Church, and her retirement home, Mallard Point. She loved singing in the choir, attending various Bible Studies, and participated in many church events and activities. She enjoyed sharing her faith and love for Jesus.

Having a caring heart for people, Phyllis volunteered 26 years for Hospice Visitation, not realizing that in the final phase of her life, Hospice would be caring for her. Throughout Phyllis’s life, she enjoyed teaching tennis and golf, traveling, photography, being active in five book clubs, and had a special love and devotion for family. In short, Phyllis loved Jesus and she loved people, especially children. A good sense of humor; never knew a stranger. Phyllis in four words: ALWAYS A READY SMILE!

She is survived by her brother and his wife, Ralph and Sharon (Loranger) Ver Ploeg, of Mesa, AZ; her sister and her husband, Virginia (Ver Ploeg) and Art Swank, of Olathe, KS; numerous nieces and nephews, Michael and his wife Cindy (Lee) Ver Ploeg of Clarksville, IN, Jason and his wife Jessica (Ott) Ver Ploeg, and their children, Anthony, Logan, Conner and Amelia, all of Clarksville, IN, Katie (Ver Ploeg) and her husband Ronald Bissig of Clarksville, IN, Robyn (Ver Ploeg) and her husband Gary Kellems of Brandon, FL, Levi Kellems and his son Roman, of Henderson, NV, Briana Kellems of Toms River, NJ, Rodney Ver Ploeg of Orlando, FL, Sandra (Ver Ploeg) Dugan, of Brandon, FL, Zachary and his wife Jamie (Ryle) Cissell, and their children, Haley and Jamison, all of Ellenton, FL, Alexandra Cissell, of Bradenton, FL, Barbara (Ver Ploeg) Vanek of New Port Beach, CA, Janna (Ver Ploeg) and her husband Timothy Flatt, and their children, Daniel and Michael Lagestee, all of Crown Point, IN, Mark Ver Ploeg of Waukesha, WI, Kimberly (Swank) and her husband Michael Weitzel, and their son, Cody, all of Olathe, KS, Heather (Swank) Eastwood of Olathe, KS, and Aaron and his wife Carrie (Ramage) Swank, and their children, Kaylea and Addison, all of Olathe, KS.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; a brother and his wife, Edwin and JoAnn (Stone) Ver Ploeg, and a niece, Julie Ver Ploeg.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 5, 2017, at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls, with burial at Oakwood Cemetery in Pella, Iowa. Visitation will be one hour before services at the church on Saturday. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice and Nazareth Lutheran Senior Choir.
