Waterloo, Iowa – Edward James Mahoney, 68 years old, of Tampa, Florida, and formerly of Independence, Iowa, died Monday, July 24, 2017, in Waterloo, Iowa, of cancer.

He was born November 3, 1948, in Independence, Iowa, the son of Daniel Dennis Mahoney, Sr. and Velma Adeline (Postal) Mahoney. He attended Jefferson High School in Independence, and then joined the Marine Corp., during the Vietnam War.

On May 30, 1969, he and Connie Marie Jasper were united in marriage in Las Vegas, NV. After the war, they made their home in Independence and other surrounding communities before settling in Waterloo. The couple most recently made their home in Tampa, Florida.

Ed worked as a supervisor for 37 years at Wiessman Industries and later O’Neal Steel. After moving to Florida, he worked at Busch Garden’s Theme Park.

Mr. Mahoney is survived by his wife, Connie Mahoney of Tampa, FL; two sons, Bob (Becky) Mahoney of Harlan, Iowa, and Jim (Theresa) Mahoney of Waterloo, Iowa; five grandchildren, Ashley, Sydnie, Devin, Niall and Quinn; two brothers, Dan Mahoney, Jr. of Vinton, Iowa, and Bill (Barb) Mahoney of The Villages, Florida; four sisters, Agnes Wilkinson of Leesburg, Florida, Joanne Webster of Loves Park, IL, Peg (Ken) Kirby of Toddville, Iowa, and Sherri (Mike Mooney) Mahoney of Gilbert, Arizona. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Ed is preceded in death by his parents; 1 brother, Raymond Mahoney; and 2 sisters, Mary Mahoney in infancy, and Mary Kidd.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. - Monday, July 31, 2017 at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Washburn, Iowa, with Reverend Clemens Bartollas officiating. Burial will follow at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Independence, Iowa. Visitation will be for an hour before services at the church.

Memorials will be directed to the family and UnityPoint Hospice.
