Biography--

JoAnn Lichty, 80, of Waterloo, Iowa, passed away on June 14, 2017, in Traer at Sunrise Hill Care Center.

JoAnn was born in Boone, Iowa, to Mark and Thelma Westcott on June 2, 1937. She went to Waterloo West High School and graduated in 1955. She worked for the Waterloo Community School District at the book depository. JoAnn enjoyed gardening, bird watching, fishing, reading, baking, and spending time with family and friends.

JoAnn and Kenny were married May 5, 1956. JoAnn enjoyed many activities with Kenny, such as, fishing-even if he didn’t put her on the fish, boating with the houseboat or fishing boat, snowmobiling with friends, camping at Crane Lake and Florida-with friends from many states, harvesting apples and polishing and packing them for a trip to the store, and Kenny enjoyed JoAnn’s delicious meals and treats, such as pies, cakes, rolls, brownies, cookies, and bread that were always made with him in mind. That was JoAnn, a wife of 61 years.

JoAnn the mother of four rambunctious toddlers all under the age of 3, was kept quite busy. Mom was busy preparing meals, like tuna casserole or marathon chicken casserole, she gardened and taught her children how to pick strawberries and raspberries, played Pepper and Karbels with family and supported them in all of their ventures-no matter what happened. That was JoAnn, our mom.

JoAnn a friend of all, would help with any and all things asked of her. She would assist others at work leaving her work go until later, make apple butter and jams that she was always willing to share, a ready and listening ear for friends that needed to talk and cry, snowmobiling and boating on the river, and games of Gin Rummy, Pepper, and Karbels filled the evenings. That was Jo Ann, our friend.

JoAnn is preceded in death by her daughter, Wendy Ann and her parents, Mark and Thelma Westcott.

Jo Ann is survived by her husband, Kenny of Waterloo; three sons, Duane (Sandy) and Kirk, both of Waterloo, and Wade (Jane) of Northfield, Minnesota; brothers and sisters, Virginia (Arnie) Hedenstrom of Warner Robins, Georgia, Wayne (Joan) of Harrisburg, Missouri, Nancy Schneider of Winona, Minnesota, Jerry (Darlene) of Decorah, Linda Mooer of Cedar Falls, and Gary (Norma) of Waterloo; nine grandchildren, Brian Lichty, Matt (Leslie) Lichty, Joshua (Jennifer) Kannegieter, Nicole (Rick) Johnson, Justin Lichty, Jennifer (Andy) Holicky, Brady (Soni) Seesz, Mitchell (Skye) Seesz, Boomer (Courtney) Seesz; 14 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Unity Point Hospice and Sunrise Hill Care Center-Memory Unit.
