Paul Helland

April 2, 1939 - June 13, 2017

Paul Henning Helland, 78, of Cedar Falls, passed away on Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at Pinnacle Care Initiatives under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice after a brief battle with cancer.

He was born in Decorah, Iowa, on April 2, 1939, the son of Chester and Hannah Helland. He graduated from Mabel High School in 1957. He attended Iowa State University where he was involved with ROTC and served in the U.S. Air Force as a second lieutenant upon his graduation from ISU with an Engineering Degree. He married Joanne Grindeland on September 3, 1960, at Locust, Iowa.

Paul was a Professional Land Surveyor and Civil Engineer. He was employed by Erdman Engineering in Decorah, Iowa, then the Engineering Department of the City of Cedar Falls, prior to starting his own business of Helland Engineering & Surveying in Cedar Falls, Iowa, in 1975 of which he was actively involved in until his passing. He relished spending his free time with his family, he was involved in the Boy Scouts for many years and assisted all three of his sons in earning the rank of Eagle Scout. He found great pleasure in driving his antique tractors.

Survived by his loving wife, Joanne Helland, three sons, Terry (Colleen) Helland of Chanhassen, Minnesota, Jeffrey (Jo) Helland of Cedar Falls and Kyle (Lisa) Helland also of Cedar Falls; 4 grandchildren, Kelsey Helland (Tim Schumacher/fiancée’) of Milwaukee, Courtney Helland of Bloomington, Indiana, Kylie and Kael Helland of Cedar Falls. A sister, Doris Doely of Spring Grove, Minnesota, a sister-in-law, Marilyn Helland of Decorah Iowa. Brother and sister In-laws, Willie and Karen Brown of Decorah, and Tom and Linda Johnson of Des Moines.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, Kevin, his brother, Merlyn Helland, Brother-in-law, Robert Doely, and a nephew, Mikkel Helland.

Service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 17, 2017 at Nazareth Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, June 16 at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home and one hour before services Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to Nazareth Lutheran Church, Western Home Communities and Cedar Valley Hospice.
