Biography--

Mavis Elaine Sommerlot, 83, of Denver, Iowa, died Thursday, May 4, 2017 at her home, of natural causes.

She was born November 11, 1933 in Ft. Dodge, Iowa, the daughter of Milton and Eleanor (Willey) Shumway. On May 1, 1955 she married Wilfred D. “Bill” Sommerlot in Waterloo; he preceded her in death on February 14, 2005.

Mrs. Sommerlot graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1952 and from Evangelical School of Nursing in Marshalltown in 1955. She worked as a R.N. at Marshalltown, Grundy Center, St. Francis and Covenant Hospitals in Waterloo where she retired in 1995 after working 25 years. She was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Waterloo, serving as a Sunday school teacher, director of V.B.S, Deacon, and the women’s organization.

Survived by: one daughter, Cynthia (Hap) Spencer of Janesville; two sons, Loren (Layla) of Tripoli, Lynn (Denise) of Sleepy Hollow, IL; five grandchildren; one sister, Nathalie Lynch of Marshalltown and one brother, Dr. David Shumway of Florida.

Preceded in death by: her parents; her husband and one brother-in-law, Floyd Lynch
