Winifred “Winnie” Grace Hayes (1939-2017)

CEDAR FALLS, IOWA – Winifred “Winnie” Grace Hayes, 78, of Cedar Falls died Tuesday, April 25, 2017, at the Western Home Communities – Windridge.

She was born January 21, 1939 in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Edward and Ruth (Williams) Grace. She married Eldon Hayes on August 23, 1958 in Garryowen, Iowa.

She earned her BA in Elementary Education and MA in Special Education with a reading endorsement from the University of Northern Iowa. She taught elementary and remedial reading in the Waverly-Shell Rock Community Schools, where she served as President of the W-SR Teacher Association.

Winnie was a faithful disciple, loving wife, mother, teacher, friend, servant of the poor, lover of life, learning and travel who was happy to get off the farm. Cancer may have brought her to the end of this life, but her dance with the disease never dominated her vibrant spirit.

Survived by: her husband of Cedar Falls; three sons, John (Jeannine) Hayes of Louisville, KY, James (Sarah) Hayes of Des Moines, and Michael (Kari) Hayes of Cedar Falls; a daughter, Mary (Rodney) Cory of Madison, WI; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Thomas (Margaret) Grace of Wheaton, IL; and a sister, Eleanor Schuster of Dubuque.

Preceded in death by: a grandson, Daniel V. Hayes; two brothers, Cletus and Allan Grace; and a sister, Mary Canice Richards.

Services: 10:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick Catholic Church with inurnment at a later date in Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Richardson Funeral Service, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also for one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or the church.
