Biography--

Robert Eugene "Shubie" Shubert, 83, of Waterloo, Iowa, died at UnityPoint Health—Allen Hospital, in Waterloo, on Thursday, May 18, 2017. He was a 52 year cancer survivor.

He was born June 13, 1933 in Omaha, Nebraska, son of Warren F. “Bill” and Eva McGrew Shubert. He married Luanne Hartman on June 22, 1956, in Waterloo.

Bob graduated from West Waterloo High School in 1952. He worked on the Illinois Central Railroad after high school. He spent four years in the military service in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Bob then attended the University of Northern Iowa and received a B.A. degree in Education in 1962.

He taught Special Education for 28 years in Waterloo at: McKinstry Junior High and East and West High Schools. At McKinstry, he coached baseball, basketball, and football. When he was at East High, he coached golf, led pep rallies and was known as “King Spirit.” He choreographed the dance lines for the Swing Shows at East High. At West High, he led pep rallies and was known as the “Rev.”

Other activities included: Elder at Westminster Presbyterian Church, served as Worship and Music chairman from 1990-1995, and sang in the choir, played bells and taught the Senior High Sunday school class. While living in Hackensack, Minnesota and Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, he directed bell choirs. Bob is a lifetime member of NEA and was a member of Phi Delta Kappa. He enjoyed golf, fishing in Canada at our cabin, and especially just being with all people.

Bob is survived by his wife, Luanne; two sons, Steven (Lori) of Buckner, Kentucky and Stanley (Terry) of Rochester, Minnesota; five grandchildren: Alexandra Shubert, Jessica (Adam) Wiggins, Miranda and Scott Shubert, and Alyssa (Rudi) Braun; and a brother, Bill Shubert of Waterloo.
