Biography--

Charles John, “Buzz” as he was called since he was a baby, Meyer, was born on September 12, 1937. He was Clifford and Adelaide (Schoo) Meyer’s oldest son. He was followed by Bob, Janie, Dick, and Gene. He grew up on the farm, milked cows before school, baled hay, and picked corn. He had a horse named Scout that he could jump on from behind and ride away. He attended Castle Hill and Edison Elementary schools, Sloane Wallace Jr. High, and graduated from Waterloo West High in 1955.

Buzz took accordion lessons as a child as his father loved to play. He enjoyed listening to polka accordion music, much to the dismay of his buddies when they traveled together.

After graduation, he worked various jobs until he was hired at John Deere. One night while he was cruising the strip on 4th Street in his ’56 shiny black Mercury, he noticed a young gal’s legs hanging out the window of her friend’s car. She had noticed his car and thought she might like to meet the guy who owned it. That gal was Doris Wagner, and they were married on March 16, 1958 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo. He was a loyal husband and their 60th wedding anniversary would have been next year.

Buzz admired classic cars and owned quite a few: 1957 mint green Thunderbird hardtop, 1963 red Ford Galaxy 500, 1966 maroon Oldsmobile convertible, his beloved 1969 red Mustang convertible, and 1979 blue Corvette. He will be missed driving his red Mustang along the roads of Waterloo and Cedar Falls.

Their first son, Charles J., was born on April 1, 1960 and died shortly after birth. Joni Lynn was born on March 17, 1962. A second son, Michael D., was born prematurely on March 31, 1964, and passed away. Todd Alan was born on February 16, 1968. Buzz was a hard-working father and taught his children to have a strong work ethic, as well as to form and keep strong friendships.

Buzz worked for Deere’s for a short time before he quit (one of his few regrets in life) and then hauled milk from the farmers to the dairy in Hudson. He was hired at the Waterloo Paper Company in 1959 as a truck driver, and retired as the office manager in 1999. Buzz and his brothers, Dick and Gene, took over the family farm as the Meyer Bros. and this is still the family farm today.

He was a competitive athlete; he bowled and played in softball and pool leagues throughout his life; he loved to play tennis and racquetball in his younger years; he enjoyed boating and fishing, although he never really caught anything; he could jump off the dock with two water-skis, put the handle behind his knees and neck, drop one ski and push it to shore, ski around the lake and glide into shore without even getting wet. He also loved to snowmobile and went on many trips with his son, brother, and friends.

Buzz was fortunate to have many wonderful, life-long friends: from grade school, high school, the paper company, bowling and recent. He enjoyed socializing with his buddies to debate worldly events, and had his daily routines of stopping at the Elks’ Club, the Eagles’ Club, and various local watering holes. Everywhere he went, he knew someone or someone recognized him.

He was very proud of his grandchildren: Austen, Jordan, Collin and Megan Powers; Jacob, Dylan, Kaitlyn and Camryn Meyer; and Jordyn Williams, and would often share their accomplishments with others. They will miss his guidance and love.

Charles “Buzz” John Meyer died Thursday, April 20, 2017, at Covenant Medical Center from injuries in an accidental fall at home. He had various health issues and was using a cane to help with his balance. Although he had taken some previous falls, his death was very unexpected. His family and friends will greatly miss him.

He is survived by his wife; daughter, Joni (Steve) Powers of Glendale, Ariz.; son, Todd (Jill) Meyer of Waterloo; his nine grandchildren; a sister, Janice Morgan of Ankeny; a brother, Gene (Marcia) Meyer of Cedar Falls; a sister-in-law, Sue Meyer of New Hartford; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; two sons in infancy; two brothers, Robert “Bob” and Richard “Dick” Meyer; and in-laws, George and Martha Wagner.
