Margaret Helen Spence Klein, 93, died, May 21, at Western Home South Cottage, Cedar Falls, Iowa.

She was born on July 25, 1923, in Earlham, Iowa, the daughter of David and Mabel Black Spence. She married Eugene Klein on April 20, 1943, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader, Iowa and he died October 3, 1998.

Margaret worked as a bookkeeper for the family business, Washburn Knife Company until they sold the business in 1987. She also volunteered at the Immaculate Conception Elementary School in Gilbertville, volunteered at Covenant Medical Center, and was a member of the group that recycled greeting cards. She was a member of the Catholic Order Foresters, the rosary society, and a member of Immaculate Conception parish in Gilbertville for 73 years,

She is survived by four sons: Patrick (Norma) of Prior Lake, MN, Keith (Connie) of Boise, ID, David (Sandi) of Buena Vista, CO, and Larry (Cathy) of Waterloo, Iowa; by four daughters: Rita (George) Amling of Cedar Falls, Elaine Catalano of Whittier, CA, Annette (Dean) Zuck of Jesup, and Angie (Paul) Hauser of Granger; a son-in-law, Bill McAleer, LaVista, NE; 25 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; two step grandsons; four step great-grandchildren; by one step great-great-grandson; a niece, Liz Walker of Austin TX; a nephew, John Russell of Round Rock, TX; and a number of nieces and nephews from her husband's family.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Doris McAleer; her brother, Robert Spence; and by two sisters, Esther Ruth in infancy and Lu (Bill) Russell.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 26, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, both in Gilbertville. Public visitation from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a 6 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also one hour prior to services Friday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church or to Camp Courageous.
