US Army Funeral Honors Detail

Lawrence Cleo McAhren was born May 29, 1929, in Crothersville, Indiana, son of Elmer Raymond and Effie Marie (McNew) McAhren. The McAhren family moved to Waterloo in an effort to find work due to the Great Depression. Lawrence attended school until 8th grade when he was needed to work on the family farm.

At 17 years of age, he wanted to serve in World War II and entered the United States Army with his parents’ permission. He further served our country in Korea. Lawrence was able to send home money which enabled his parents to build their first home on the farm. After an honorable discharge, he worked as a brick layer. Lawrence was introduced to Shirley Mae Sharlotte Campbell on a blind date and the couple married on August 6, 1966. After retiring from masonry, he worked for the City of Waterloo jack hammering and reframing catch basins.

Lawrence enjoyed target shooting, hunting and fishing. He was a very generous person who would have given the shirt off his own back to help others throughout his lifetime. Many will remember Lawrence for his love of Old Milwaukee which he called “apples”; an apple a day keeps the doctor away.

Lawrence passed away at home at the age of 87 years on Tuesday, November 22, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents; beloved wife, Shirley who passed away in 2008; and 8 siblings: Wayne, Donald, Arnold, Herbie, Eugene, Glenn, Thelma and Bonnie. Lawrence is survived by 3 daughters: Patty (Jerry Weekley) McAhren, Sharla McAhren, Lorie (Merritt) Terrell all of Waterloo; 2 sons: Mike (Janet) McAhren, and Robin McAhren both of Waterloo; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Kenneth McAhren of Waterloo.

Memorials may be directed to the Family.
