Gary entered the United States Air Force in 1971, serving 9 months of his enlistment then being commissioned as a Health Care Executive.

He met Raelene Benckeser in 1974, while he was stationed at an Air Force hospital in Omaha and the two were married on December 27, 1975, in Ogallala, NE. Together, they served their country domestically, as well as in Turkey and Germany. In 1976, Gary received his Masters in Health Care Administration from Baylor University. He retired from the Air Force separating at Luke Air Force Base in Phoenix, AZ, in 1997, and he and his family moved to Waterloo, where he served as Administrator at the Family Practice Center on Kimball Avenue.

In addition to being a devoted family man, Gary was a Fellow in the American College of Health Care Executives and served as Church Trustee and Treasurer. Above all, he dearly loved and devotedly served God!

Gary passed away at the age of 68 years on Sunday, January 15, 2017, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.
