Biography--

Donald P. Chapman, 80, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Iowa, died Sunday, November 6, 2016, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, Iowa.

He was born August 16, 1936, in Butler County, Iowa, near New Hartford, the son of Clayton and Lucille (Mason) Chapman. Don married Elaine Harken June 3, 1955, in New Hartford.

Don graduated from New Hartford High School in 1955 and worked at Weyerhauser Paper Company for 47 years and worked part-time for Isley Farms for nearly 50 years. Don was a member of First United Methodist Church in Cedar Falls.

Don is survived by his wife, Elaine Chapman, of Cedar Falls; a son, Dwight (Rhonda) Chapman, of New Hartford; a daughter, Joan Chapman, of Cedar Park, Texas; three grandchildren: DeShanna Chapman of Waverly, Iowa, Steven (Kari) Chapman of Longmont, Colorado and D'Arcy (Matt) Wittenburg of Denver, Iowa; seven great-grandchildren: Jalen Stovall, Bo Chapman, Angello, Breckin, Axton, Laikyn and Baylor Wittenburg; seven sisters, Darlene Jordan of Cedar Falls, Margaret Michaels and Nancy Kahler, both of Waterloo, Shirley Weigand of Dubuque, Iowa, Rose Thorne of Parkersburg, Iowa, Janet (Don) Groenveld and Lynda Southard, both of Aplington; four brothers: Dean (Dorthy) Chapman of Wonewoc, Wisconsin, Harold Chapman, Larry (Carol) Chapman and Greg (Kathy) Chapman, all of New Hartford, along with many nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Kenneth Chapman and one in infancy; a sister, Marian Christensen; one sister-in-law, Janet Chapman, and five brothers-in-law: Floyd (Jiggs) Jordan, Ferd Michaels, Jerry Kahler, Dale Weigand, and Robert Thorne.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, November 10, 2016, at First United Methodist Church in Cedar Falls, with burial at Oak Hill Cemetery in New Hartford. Visitation will be 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home and one hour before services at the church on Thursday. For many years he played softball for several local and church teams. Don enjoyed game hunting in the mountains of the west, mostly in Montana. He spent many hours watching or helping in the pits at the stock car races or the drag races. At the age of 40 he learned to ski. Don continued to ski each year taking many friends and family on his skiing adventures. After retirement, he took up golfing and biking. Don rode RAGBRAI until he was 79 years old. He was an avid "Hawkeye" fan. Traveling to the mountains to hike and sight-see were also a joy for him. Most important to him was spending time with his family and especially all of his great-grandchildren.
