April 20, 1927 - May 10, 2017

Arland “Axe” Haugen, 90, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, died Wednesday, May 10, 2017, at Western Home Communities Nation Cottage in Cedar Falls.

He was born April 20, 1927, in Pine Island, Minnesota, the son of C. Adolph and Bertha (Hoven) Haugen. Axe married Beverly Mae Hillestad on August 21, 1948 in Dennison, Minnesota. He graduated from Cannon Falls, Minnesota High School and the University of Minnesota, with a degree in Business Administration.

Axe served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked for IBM, Kelly-Morey Investments, and was the owner and general manager of Shakey’s Pizza Restaurants in Cedar Falls and Waterloo. Axe served on the Cedar Falls City Council for 20 years. He was a member of the Waterloo Lions Club, Toastmasters, Waterloo Elks Club, Sunnyside Country Club, Sons of Norway the Cedar Falls Historical Society, and Nazareth Lutheran Church.

Axe is survived by his wife, Beverly Haugen, of Cedar Falls; his son, David (Tori) Haugen, of Macomb, Illinois; his two daughters, Nancy Larson of Ames, Iowa and Jane (Dick) Schaefer of Littleton, Colorado; six grandchildren, Siri Schaefer, Jocelyn (Tim) Gilbert, Ben (Chelsa) Schaefer, Shaina (James) Rich, Nicole (Erik) Houston and Danny (Danielle) Schaefer; ten great grandchildren, Myles, Aubrey, Sydney, Raum, Ryker, Brodie, Jairus, Charlotte, Emma and Lydia; his brother, Vernon (Betty) Haugen, of Elijay, Georgia, sister-in-law, Vera Haugen, of Northfield, Minnesota, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son-in-law, Cliff Larson; two brothers, Harris and Al Haugen; and an infant sister, Jane Ann Haugen.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at Nazareth Lutheran Church, with burial at Fairview Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 16 at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, and one hour before service at the church. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Falls Historical Society, the Northeast Iowa Food Bank, and Nazareth Lutheran Church. Condolences may be left at www.DahlFuneralHome.com.
