Biography--

Marvin “Marv” Hess, Sr., age 82, of Waterloo, Iowa, and formerly of La Porte City, Iowa, died on October 17, 2016 at home.

He was born on March 20, 1934 in Mount Auburn, Iowa, the son of Nicholas Thomas and Evangeline “Eva” Long Hess.

He married Barbara Hummel in March 1957, they were later divorced; Marv was united in marriage with Elizabeth Dunn on June 2, 1979 in Waterloo.

Marv worked as a mechanic at Sears Auto, he owned and operated Marv’s North Star in Washburn. He served in the U.S. Army from May 1954 until his honorable discharge, he then served in the U.S. Army Reserves until retiring in March 1994. Marv was a member of Moose Lodge serving twice as governor, he was also a lifetime member of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth “Liz” of Waterloo; five daughters: Debbie Hale of Wynne, Ark., Pam Kabela of Evansdale, Donna Penne of Waterloo, Sharon (Denny) Miller of Prairie Du Chien, Wis., and Karen (Rick) Newlon of Waterloo; three sons, Marvin (Jennifer) Hess, Jr. of Waterloo, Thomas Hess of Waterloo, and Daniel Hess of Waterloo; 16 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Marvin in infancy; a grandson, Eric Newlon; a great-grandson, Tristan Kabela; five sisters: Lola Westendorf, Lucille Raines, Bonnie Durnan, Betty Michael, and Melvina in infancy; and a brother, Richard Thompson.
