Visitation:
Tuesday at Garden View Chapel, 3655 Logan Avenue in Waterloo and an hour prior to the services on Wednesday at the church.

Biography--

Richard G. Schmidt, age 84, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Sunday, December 11, 2016 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

He was born May 13, 1932, in Independence, Iowa, the son of Lena Mae Kelley. Richard graduated from Independence High School with the Class of 1950 and was Heavyweight State Wrestling Champion in 1950. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving in France during the Korean War.

Richard was united in marriage with Dora Ann Thill on December 8, 1951 in Waterloo. She preceded him in death on April 23, 2001. He married Janet E. Payne on May 6, 2006 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Waterloo.

Richard worked for Titus Manufacturing for over 25 years and also owned and operated the family business, Bruns Machine, Inc. in Cedar Falls from 1963 until retiring in 1997. He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).

Survivors include a son, Dave (Nancy) Schmidt of Cedar Falls; a daughter, DeeAnn Francis (Steve McRobie) of Cedar Falls; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his wife, Janet and her children, John (Cindy) Christensen of Chicago, David (Susan) Christensen of Nashville, Jim Christensen of Des Moines, Julie Christensen (John Diehl) of Nashville; and special friends, Pat and Cindy Gronigan.

He was preceded in death by his mother; his wife, Dora, a son, Rich; and a son-in-law, Robert Francis.
