Russell I. “Red” “Pops” Heidemann, age 86, of Waterloo, died Thursday, February 16, 2017 at UnityPoint-Allen Hospital.
He was born January 31, 1931, in Waterloo, the son of Fred L. and Helen (Humphreys) Heidemann. Russell was united in marriage with Virginia M. Donath on January 14, 1950, in Waterloo. Russell worked as a machinist for John Deere & Co. for 38 years, retiring on August 31, 1987. He was a member of UAW Local 838 and a lifelong resident of Waterloo.
When not cheering for the Waterloo Black Hawks, Russell was busy fixing, repairing and building. He enjoyed fishing and gardening, but treasured the time spent with his beloved wife and family.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia of Waterloo; a son, Russell L. “Rusty” (Tammy) Heidemann; three daughters: Linda (Dean) Storey, Carol (Terry) Peters, and Sandy (Scott) Hayes; 14 grandchildren: Bobbi (Travis) Schaben, Dainna (Heath) Bartness, Deenna (Ryan) Jensen, Derek Hayes, Caitlin (Rob) Ferry, Kevin (Angie) Peters, Brian (Becki) Peters, Ryan Peters, Blake, Bryceton, Makayla and Noah Heidemann, and Joshua and Justin Hunter; 15 great-grandchildren: Isaac, Evan, Adelynn and Alaina Schaben, Lydia, Harrison, Henry and Molly Bartness, Olive and Oliver Jensen, Kylie Cutsforth, Corbin, Keyan and Colton Peters and Landon Ferry.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Robert Heidemann; a grandson, Michael Storey and two brothers, Willard and Robert Heidemann.
