Orslow C. “Bud” Sutherland

May 16, 1934 - December 23, 2016

CEDAR FALLS, IOWA – Orslow C. “Bud” Sutherland, 82, of Cedar Falls died Friday, December 23, 2016, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.

He was born May 16, 1934, in Cedar Falls, the son of Burness Buck and Eva Marle (Petersen) Sutherland. He married Pricilla De Blawe and they later divorced. He then married Kay Kono Short.

He graduated from Cedar Falls High School and attended the University of Northern Iowa. He served in the United States Army and worked at John Deere, Bud’s Shell, and then was employed for 15 years with Black Hawk County Secondary Roads department, retiring in 2000. He ran a snowplowing business for over 50 years and was a longtime landlord of rental properties in the area. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Cedar Falls for over 70 years, serving in several offices. He served on the Sturgis Falls Board for 15 years.

Bud is survived by his wife, Kay of Cedar Falls; three sons, Clayton and Steven of Oklahoma, and Douglas; two stepdaughters, Jodi (Michael) Guthrie and Jo Linn (Peter) Norman, both of Phoenix; a stepson, Jon Short of Phoenix; six step grandchildren: Aaron, Eric, Randi Linn, Zach, Paige and Caitlin; two nieces and one nephew.

Preceded in death by: a sister, Virginia Petersen Benson; and a stepson, Jeffrey Short.

Services: Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Visitation on Tuesday at Richardson Funeral Service, Cedar Falls, and also prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family to be designated at a later date.

Bud always believed that memories cannot be taken away because of Alzheimers. He gave of himself his talent, time and energy to anyone who needed help. He never passed anyone in distress. Bud’s smile would always light up the room. He was a friend to everyone.
