Biography--

Hugh Marvin Wurmle, 91, of Waterloo, died at Friendship Village Pavilion on Saturday, March 25, 2017.

He was born February 21, 1926, in Du Page County, Illinois, son of Jacob Henry and Grace (Schiefer) Wurmle.

Hugh married Mary Casten on November 16, 1962, in Postville, Iowa.

He graduated from Pontiac Township High School in 1943 and Purdue University with a B.S. in chemistry in 1950.

Hugh was a territory sales rep for Merck & Co. for 34 years, before retiring in 1986.

He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II from 1944-46. Hugh joined the Naval Reserves in 1947 and later entered active duty during the Korean Conflict from 1951-52.

Hugh was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he had been an elder, deacon, usher, and taught Sunday school. He was a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge #624 and El Kahir Shrine. Hugh was a volunteer at Hoover Intermediate and Edison Elementary Schools. He served on Friendship Village Foundation Board for several years and volunteered at Covenant Medical Center. He was a member of Gideons International for more than 30 years. Hugh was a past president of the Stormy Lake Association in Wisconsin, and was also a member of Conover Evangelical Free Church in Conover, Wisconsin.

They spent their summers at their summer home on Stormy Lake in Conover, which has been in the family since 1930. Hugh was an avid reader, especially medical journals, and he used to enjoy flying and held a pilot’s license.

Hugh is survived by his wife, Mary of Waterloo; two daughters, Heidi (Walter) Baskin, Yorktown, Virginia and Jennifer (C. Allen) Hawkins, Webster Groves, Missouri; and three grandchildren: John Hawkins, Andrew Baskin, and Madison Baskin.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Craig W. Wurmle.
