Biography--

Robert Bernard “Bob” Boesen, 83, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Thursday, August 4, 2016, surrounded by his family, of heart failure.

He was born December 24, 1932, in Waterloo, son of Howard and Catharine Fettes Boesen. He married Betty Freshwater on May 4, 1957 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waterloo.

Bob graduated from West High School in 1951. He was employed by the United States Postal Service until his retirement at age 60. Bob served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War after attending the University of Northern Iowa on a football and wrestling commitment.

Bob coached football at Sacred Heart for more than 40 years and wrestling at Sacred Heart and Columbus High School through the 2016 season (50 plus years). An award was created in his name at Columbus High School to recognize a wrestler that exemplifies great work ethic, positive attitude and selflessly works for the betterment of others, not only as a wrestler but a student and community member. This award like its namesake, does so without recognition and strives to do the right thing at all times.

Survivors include his wife Betty; three sons: Anthony “Tony” (Sherri) of Salem, OR, Jerome “Jerry” (Jill) of Cedar Falls, Bradley “Brad” of Waterloo; daughter Mary (Daniel) Kubicek of Excelsior, MN; four grandchildren: Aaron Boesen of Iowa City, Dana Boesen of Waterloo, Larissa Boesen of Cedar Falls, Elizabeth Kubicek of Excelsior, MN. He is also survived by three sisters: Mary Ellen Hadachek of Dysart, Patricia Van Dorn and Barbara (Duane) Schafer both of Waterloo; a brother-in-law Donley “Don” (Theresa) Freshwater; four sisters-in-law: Phyllis Boesen, Beverly Boesen, and Joyce Freshwater all of Waterloo and Kathy Freshwater of Kansas City, KS; 11 nieces and 16 nephews.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws Harvey and Gladys Freshwater; two brothers: William “Bill” Boesen and James “Jim” Boesen; four brothers-in-law Robert Hadachek, John Van Dorn, Earl Freshwater, and John Freshwater; two nephews: John Van Dorn and Gregory Freshwater.
