Biography--

Donald S. Shipanik, 80, of Hudson, Iowa, died at home Thursday, Feb. 9, from complications of Lewy Body Dementia.

He was born Dec. 31, 1936, in Chicago, son of Harry and Adeline Melant Shipanik. He married Marilyn A. Marsau on Nov. 4, 1958, in Iowa City; she died April 14, 2006.

He graduated from Lindblom High School in 1954, attended the University of Iowa where he received a football scholarship and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a BA in education. Donald taught PE and coached at Orange High School; he managed the Mr. Steak Restaurant in Waterloo for a few years before moving to Colorado where he was vice president of operations for Mr. Steak and then owned a Mr. Steak in Denver. He most recently had owned and operated the Hudson House until it burned down in April 2003. He attended St. Timothy Lutheran Church, Hudson.

Survived by two daughters, Liz (Dan) Folladori and Katie (Perry) Oglesbee, both of Hudson; nine grandchildren: Lauren (Kyle) Mentzer, Ben Folladori, Sam (Justi Uden) Folladori, Luke Oglesbee, Emily (Zach) Drinovsky, Abbie Oglesbee, Anne (Jacob) Gardner, Brenna (Ryan) Dabney and Lindsay Hall; nine great-grandchildren: Sully Oglesbee, Kennedy and Graham Drinovsky, Attica and Ava Gardner, Adrianna, Skylar and Olivia Dabney, and Trevor Hall; and two brothers, Jerome of California and Raymond of Arizona.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Suzy Hall; a great-granddaughter, Lillian Suzann Oglesbee; and a great-grandson, Noah Drinovsky.
