Biography--

Warren Leo Tarr, 94, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Friday, March 17, 2017, at the Friendship Village Pavilion.

He was born April 5, 1922 in Waterloo, son of Charles W. and Ellen C. Griffith Tarr and graduated from East Waterloo High School in 1940.

Warren enlisted in the United States Army Air Corp in January 1943. He was a C-47 pilot totaling 1,100 flight hours earning the Distinguished Flying Cross with three Oak Leaf clusters, an Air Medal with four clusters, and two stars on his Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon. He received an honorable discharge in 1945 with the rank of 1st Lt.

He married Marguerite M. “Micki” Schumann on August 2, 1945 at the First Lutheran Church in Waterloo. She died December 2, 2016.

Warren was an accountant at Rath Packing Co. and worked there before and after his military service until his retirement in 1984. He also served as Treasurer/Secretary for the Rath Management Club; participated in Junior Achievement and Boy Scouts.

He was a member of St. Ansgar Lutheran Church and Waterloo American Legion. Warren volunteered at Covenant Medical Center as a van driver and tutored grade school students in Math while wintering in Arizona.

Warren traveled extensively with Elder Hostel. He enjoyed reading and being outdoors, hiking, skiing. He especially loved biking and participated in several Ragbrai’s . He was a member of League of American Wheelmen and Rainbow Cyclists.

He is survived by a son, Michael (Christine) Tarr of Omaha, NE; two daughters, Karen Tarr, of St. Paul, MN and Jan (Rick Aster) Tarr of Fort Collins, CO; six grandchildren: Tiffany (Ryan) Reasland, Brad (Jenny) Tarr, Scott Bishop, Mike Bishop, Ellen Aster, and Julie Aster; and four great-grandchildren: Addyson, Colton, Harper, and Dylan.

Warren is preceded in death by his wife.
