Thomas Monroe Helling

HUDSON, IOWA — Thomas Monroe Helling, 85, of Hudson, Iowa, died at Covenant Medical Center on Monday, August 15, 2016 of natural causes.

He was born August 15, 1931, in Kensett, Iowa, son of Thomas and Myrtle Sandun Helling and attended Kensett High School.

He married Shirley Ann Hove on Oct. 7, 1949, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He was a truck driver for Northern Natural Gas Co. for 11 years and then joined the Hudson Police Department and retired as chief of police after 29 years in 1989. He was a member of the Community Church of Hudson.

Thomas is survived by his wife Shirley; sons, Richard and his wife Marilyn of Hudson and Mark and his fiancée Lisa of Benson, Arizona; four grandchildren: Heather (Gabe) Wyckoff, Missy Helling, Aaron (Melissa) Helling, and Kris (Brooke) Helling; six great-grandchildren: Nathan and Brady Wyckoff, Scarlett Helling, and Kale, Liam and Karson Helling; four sisters: Betty Shanks of Spokane, Washington, Donna Gray and her husband Larry of Mason City, Iowa, Barb Gibbs of Granbury, Texas, and Charlotte Jost of Lincoln, Nebraska; and his brother, Bob of Longville, Minnesota.

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Vicky Harder; a granddaughter, April Harder, and a brother, Archie.

Services: 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Community Church of Hudson with burial in Hudson Cemetery.

Visitation: 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Locke Funeral Home, Waterloo.
