H.R. “Dick” Eaves was born on January 11, 1934, son of Leo and Dorothy (Bix) Eaves in Ottumwa, Iowa. Dick attended Ottumwa High School where he excelled in basketball, baseball, track and football. In his senior year, he received the honor of All State football as a tight end. He met the love of his life, Clara Hope Templeton, in his junior year.

He married his high school sweetheart on July 6, 1952. Dick worked for Northwestern Bell in Ottumwa, Storm Lake, Des Moines and the Waterloo/Cedar Falls areas. After leaving Northwestern Bell, Dick and Clara opened the Country Kitchen in Waterloo beginning 35 years of ownership of seven different restaurants. Dick shared his leadership skills on the Board of Trustees for Northwestern College in Roseville, Minnesota; on the original Board of Directors at Friendship Village; on the Board of Directors of Christian Counseling Ministries in Buena Vista, CO; and on the Waterloo Human Rights Commission. He was President of the Kiwanis Waterloo Noon Club, served on the Waterloo Chamber of Commerce and received Philanthropist of the Year for the Red Cross.

Dick and Clara shared their vocal talents in concerts. One of his favorite accomplishments was working with the 5th graders at Orange Elementary developing and publishing a school newspaper for which he received the Governor’s Volunteer of the Year award.

Dick died at the age of 82 years at Cedar Valley Hospice on Wednesday, June 1, 2016, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Donald Eaves.
