Dorothy Julia Schares, 81, of Waterloo, Iowa, died May 20, 2016 of natural causes.

She was born June 17, 1934, in Waterloo, the daughter of Peter and Louise Frost Youngblut. She married Edward Schares on August 23, 1955 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Raymond.

Together Ed and Dorothy farmed for many years.

Dorothy is survived by her husband Ed of Waterloo; seven children, Marilyn (Rick) Schmitz of Waterloo, Monica (Terry) Bengston of Fairbank, Dan (Joyce) Schares of Jesup, Deb (Rick) Phillips of Jesup, Karen (T.J.) Taylor of Waterloo, Kathy (Dennis) Even of Gilbertville, and Ken (Teresa) Schares of Elk Run Heights; 22 grandchildren, 8 great- grandchildren and a sister Elaine Thoma of Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her five brothers and sisters-in-law, Earl and Agnes, Ray and Cleo, Jack and Geraldine, Lester and Edith, Harold and JoAnn Youngblut; her sister and brothers-in-law Marie and Reynold Schmitz and Roland Thoma.

Services: 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, May 24, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Gilbertville, with burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Raymond. Public visitation from 3-8 P.M. Monday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a 4 P.M. rosary and 6:30 P.M. vigil service. Visitation also one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to St. Joseph Catholic Church, Raymond or the Bosco System.

Dorothy loved spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, sewing, traveling, and loved playing cards.
