Sarah A. "Sally" Hess (1953-2016)

WATERLOO, IOWA — Sarah A. “Sally” Hess, 62, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, May 18, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

She was born September 17, 1953, in Waterloo, daughter of Leo and Muriel Kafer. She married Randal J. Hess on September 23, 1972, at First Lutheran Church, Waterloo. They later divorced.

Sally graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1971. She was formerly employed by the Waterloo Greyhound Park and spent many years raising her children and caring for her grandchildren.

She is survived by a daughter, Samantha (Trail) Mull of Waterloo; a son, Patrick (Stephanie) of Belleville, Ill.; six grandchildren, Alexandra Hess, Maxwell Caughron, Jaylen Hess, Owen Mull, Benton Mull and Oliver Mull; her mother of Waterloo; four sisters, Kathie (Larry) Buck of Independence, Sue (Dave) McCracken of Waterloo, Betsy (Mike) Woodley of Urbandale and Joanie (Tim) Phillips of Waverly; two sisters-in-law, Joanie (Dick) Kerns of Waterloo and Janice Kafer of Brainerd, Minn.; three brothers, Joe (Julie) Kafer of Johnston, and Pat (Lu) and Tom Kafer, both of Waterloo; a sister-in-law, Barb Kafer of Ashland, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her father; and by three brothers, Dave, Dick and Chris Kafer.

Per family wishes, there will be no funeral service or visitation. Iowa Cremation, Cedar Rapids, assisted the family. A celebration of life is planned for a later date.
