Jay "J.C." Milligan

Died: May 16, 2016

Biography--

J.C. (Jay) Milligan, 69, of Waterloo, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 16, 2016 at NorthCrest Specialty Care after a long and protracted illness.

Jay was born June 25, 1946 in Des Moines, Iowa, son of Richard and Barbara Millligan. Later, for short periods of time the family lived in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin; Fenimore, Wisconsin; Fort Dodge, Iowa; Jefferson, Iowa; and finally settled in Waterloo in 1953.

He graduated from East Waterloo High School in 1964. Jay worked many years for Martin Brothers in Waterloo and Myers-Cox Co. out of Peosta, Iowa, retiring in 2010. He married Helen Louise Boyens of Lamont, Iowa on August 23, 1980.

Jay had a number of interests over the years. He defined the term “Yankee Fan” and they were his team for over 55 years. Jay was always the Yankees fan and his brother was the Dodgers fan. Name a Yankee player from the 50s on and you can bet he had their baseball card.

He was also an avid fan of professional wrestling and spent many hours cheering on his favorite wrestler of the hour. His favorite term for the bad guy was “yellow-bellied chicken liver”!! His fanmanship began again during the 50s during the time of Verne Gagne (the good guy) and Killer Kowalski (the bad guy). He was an avid collector of all things.

He came across his passion for poker honestly as the game was played with great spirit, lots of laughs, and much noise with family and friends in the dining room in the Madison Street apartment.

Some of the games were so complicated they should have come with a sheet of instructions. His poker playing days continued with Sunday games with Helen and some old friends and the weekly games at the Elks Club in Waterloo. Another favorite was the frequent Farkle games in which his nickname was Mr. Big.

Survived by his wife, Helen of Waterloo; cat, Miss Lilly; his brother, Jeff (Caren) of San Antonio, Texas; and numerous cousins; nieces, nephews; great-nieces, great-nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents; his grandmother Rose; and beloved pets, Mister Mister and Miss Missy.
