Death of a Wealthy Pioneer
Special Correspondent Dubuque Herald:

Waterloo, Dec. 31. – William Hammond an old citizen, aged seventy-six years, died on Friday night last about midnight, after an illness of some two weeks.

Mr. Hammond was one of the early settlers of this city and one of the largest taxpayers in this city. His estate is variously estimated at from $150,000 to $200,000.

Mr. Hammond married his second wife about five years ago, and I understand that she talks about relinquishing her right of dower, being rich in her own right, if so this will leave the property to be equally distributed between his five children as follows: Mrs. Dr. Eddy, Mrs. C. W. Mullen, Miss Amelia, Miss Fannie and Henry. Mr. Hammond died intestate, and in regard to his general habits, I have this remark to make only, his object in life seemed to be to accumulate and hold.
