Merna Irene Johnson

December 10, 1924 - April 22, 2016

Merna Irene Johnson, 91, of Waterloo, passed away Friday, April 22, 2016 at Friendship Village in Waterloo.

She was born December 10, 1924 in Floyd County, daughter of Dan and Maria Otto Hartman. She was raised on a farm east of Charles City and attended school in Charles City.

Merna married Melvin Strebe and to this union a son, Dan was born. They later divorced. In 1955 she married Walter Keniston and lived in Waterloo. Merna owned and worked at Kaes Restaurant in Nashua, and Park and Eat and the Jefferson House in Waterloo. Merna and Walter traveled throughout the United States. Walter passed away in 1996. Family and friends were very important to her, especially holidays with her family.

In 2002 Merna married Laurence Johnson, they lived in Janesville. Merna and Laurence enjoyed playing cards with friends and neighbors. In 2011, they moved to Friendship Village in Waterloo. She was a member of the Red Hat Ladies and was a member of Grace Reformed Church.

Merna is survived by her husband, Laurence of Waterloo; daughter-in-law, Susan Strebe of Waterloo; a niece, Mary (James) Ruzicka of Marble Rock; a nephew, Larry (Sharon) Johnson of Silvis, Ill.; step children, Sandra Stark of Seattle, Wash., Marilyn (Steve) Grice of Spirit Lake, Rod (Jane) Johnson of Knob Noster, Mo., Jeff (Julie) Johnson of Rochester, Minn. and several step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Walter Keniston; son, Dan Strebe; sister, Evelyn Johnson; brother-in-law, Floyd Johnson and step-grandchildren, Michelle Spande and James Alexander.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 30 at Grace Reformed Church, Waterloo with Pastor Dave Van Nettin officiating. Visitation will be held one hour before the funeral at the church. Burial will be at Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery following the service.
