Biography--

Gerda L. Hirsch, age 77, of Elk Run Heights, died Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at NorthCrest Specialty Care in Waterloo.

She was born November 14, 1938 in Hanley, Iowa, the daughter of Mouritz and Blanche Miller Christensen.

Gerda was united in marriage with Russell J. Rust in 1956. They had five children together and later were divorced. She married Vernon L. Hirsch on April 5, 1980 in Waterloo. He preceded her in death on March 16, 2002.

Gerda worked as a caregiver for special needs clients at Country View Care Center until her retirement in 2000.

She enjoyed doing crafts, crocheting and gardening. Gerda loved to spend time with her family and friends. She had a big heart and her home was open to anyone.

Survivors include four sons: Russell “Sonny” (Beverly) Rust of Elk Run Heights, Mark (Barb) Rust and Mike Rust, both of Waterloo, and Rick Hirsch of Missouri; two daughters, Lisa (Dave) Hickman of Garnavillo, Iowa, and Carla (Dan) Harris of Warner Robins, Georgia; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins; a brother, Don (Marilyn) Christensen of Cedar Falls; and four sisters: Virginia Wahl of California, Dolores Morrison and Gladys Hirsch, both of Waterloo, and Patricia Landt of Cedar Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Vernon; a grandson, Chad Hickman; two brothers: Maurice “Bud” Christensen and Jim Christensen; and two sisters: Donna Moran and Karen Hamm.
