Howard Dale Henderson

March 26, 1923 - April 6, 2016

Howard Dale Henderson was born March 26, 1923 on a farm near Bradgate, son of Floyd and Alice (Hemerson) Henderson. He graduated from Waterloo West High School in January 1941.

Howard served in the 106th and 29th Infantry Divisions during World War II. He was commissioned while serving with the 29th Division in the European Theater. Howard received his bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Iowa in 1948, graduating with honors. He was eternally grateful for the benefits of the World War II G.I. Bill of Rights which provided the opportunity for a college education.

On April 3, 1947, Howard was married to Lois Jean Dryden in Waterloo. He worked in public accounting and passed the CPA exam in 1950, at which time he became associated with Chamberlain Corp. Howard was primarily involved with government defense contracts and worked at Chamberlain’s Waterloo Division for 22 years and at their corporate headquarters in Elmhurst, Illinois, for 17 years. He retired in December 1989 after serving as vice president and corporate controller.

Howard was a member of Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society, American Institute of Accountants, American Defense Preparedness Association, Association of the United States Army, Waterloo Black Hawk Hockey Board, SCORE, Sunnyside Country Club, Inverness Golf and Country Club, National Association of Cost Accountants, and I Club. He was a member of Kimball Avenue United Methodist Church.

Howard’s passion in life was his wife and family. Whether it was fishing in Canada, hunting, playing gin rummy with Jean or attending family events, he truly loved being a husband, dad, grandpa and great-grandpa. He also enjoyed golf, bridge, watching the Cubs, Hawkeyes and Bears on TV and wintering in Inverness, Fla. Howard cherished childhood memories of spending summers on the farms of his grandparents, aunts and uncles of Bradgate.

Howard passed away on Wednesday, April 6, 2016, at Rosewood Estate at the age of 93 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; beloved daughter, Julie Ann Henderson; and two brothers, Bob Henderson and Floyd “Bud” Henderson. Howard is survived by Jean, his beloved wife of 69 years; one son, Kirk (Terri) Henderson of Waterloo; two daughters, Suzanne (Wayne) Vantluka of LaGrange, Ill., and Jane (Stan) Allen of Omaha, Neb.; four grandchildren, Heidi (Chris) Wilson of Ankeny, Amy (Jeff) Douglas, Brian (Sarahjoy) Allen and Kimberly (Michael) Pecha, all of Omaha; eight great-grandchildren, Owen Douglas, Julia Wilson, Jon Wilson, Parker Douglas, Wyatt Pecha, Natalie Wilson, Ruby Jane Pecha and Iris Allen; and one sister, Beverly Beck of Phoenix, Ore.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 9, at Kimball Avenue United Methodist Church,1207 Kimball Ave., Waterloo, preceded by an hour of visitation. Military rites will be conducted at the church by Evansdale AMVETS Post 31 and Waterloo AMVETS Post 19. Burial will be at a later date in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery, 3430 West Fourth St.
