Pastor David L. Moore

Died March 27, 2016

Biography-

Pastor David Lee Moore, 87, of Waterloo, went home to be with His Lord on Easter morning.

He was born in Binghamton, NY on February 1, 1929, and attended Baptist Bible College in Johnson City, NY, graduating in 1952. He married his high school sweetheart, Bertha Jane Monasky, on June 14, 1952; they were married 60 years before Bertha’s homegoing in 2012. His pastoral ministry commenced at the First Christian Church in Binghamton, NY, from 1952 to 1956.

He subsequently served as youth pastor and then senior pastor at Walnut Street Baptist Church, and later Walnut Ridge Baptist Church in Waterloo, from 1956 to 1974. He pastored Cedar Hill Baptist Church in Cleveland Heights, OH from 1974 to 1992, and then Bethlehem Baptist Church, also in the Cleveland area, from 1992 to 1998. He returned to Walnut Ridge in Waterloo in 1998 as Pastor Emeritus, and continued to actively teach and serve until this past fall.

In addition to his pastoral service, David served on the boards of a number of ministry organizations including the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches, Friendship Village, Cedarville University, Baptist Bible College (now Summit University), and Baptist Mid-Missions. His wisdom, grace, and humility were recognized qualities in these and other venues in which he served.

David is survived by his and Bertha’s children: Suzanne Oettel (husband Gordon) of St. Cloud, MN, Elaine Mellinger (husband John) of Springfield, IL, Christine Hlad (husband Tom) of Waterloo, IA, Grace Mackeverican (husband Jack) of Columbus, OH, and Timothy Moore (wife Stephanie) of Cleveland, OH. He is also survived by his sister, Faith Wood of Harrisburg, PA, and by 18 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.

David’s life was characterized by a deep devotion to his Lord Jesus, and by an evident joy in serving people with a depth of caring and compassion that were distinctive and beautifully reflected His Lord. His love for God’s Word, for teaching its truth, for living in obedience to its principles himself, and his love for all people he encountered, were all distinguishing features in his ministry.

He sought to lead his life so as to “live a life worthy of the Lord, pleasing Him in every way, bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God,” which was one of his “life verses.” Many who met him felt they had found their best friend, and his compassion to those struggling and hurting in life’s trials was a source of encouragement to countless individuals who crossed his path.

Easter was David’s favorite day, because of the hope and joy Jesus’ resurrection brought to his own life and ministry to others. It was fitting for him to see His Savior face to face on the day celebrating that resurrection. Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His faithful servants. Psalm 116:15.
