Biography--

Carol S. Houk, 71 of Waterloo, died on Saturday, March 26, 2016 from complication of cancer.

She was born July 21, 1944 in Oskaloosa, daughter of Clayton and Helen (Knowler) Kirk. Carol graduated from West Waterloo High School in 1962, received her BA from UNI in 1966, and her Master’s Degree from Truman State University, Kirksville, Missouri, in 1980.

She married Robert J. Houk, March 17, 1992 in Miami, Florida. He died May 2, 2009

Carol worked for the Waterloo Community Schools for 37 years and taught at Kingsley, West Ridge, Castle Hill, and Edison Schools. After retiring from the school system, she worked as a Museum Educator at the Grout Museum until 2010.

She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Parish where she was lector, lay Eucharist minister, a member of the vestry, altar guild, choir, chimes and Chat ‘n Sew.

She is past president of Alpha Delta Kappa –Lambda chapter. She was co-president of Iowa Academy of Science – Elementary Division. Member of Retired School Personnel Assoc, Mended Hearts Assoc., Friends of the Gallagher Bluedorn, a Gold Star Teacher, Friends of the arts, PTO, Mid-America Credit Union board member and was Waterloo Teacher of the Year.

Carol also enjoyed reading mystery novels, watching movies, working puzzles, shopping with her sister, and talking with her many friends.

She is survived by a sister, Helen (Robert) Hill; by nieces and nephews: Andrea (Robert III) Houk, John (Laura) Cummings, Stephen (Cheri) Cummings, Jennifer (Robert) Drobinski and Jessica (Tom) Gallagher; great-nieces and nephews: James, Katharine and Daniel Cummings, Ania, Emily, Abigail, Ellie, and Alina Drobinski, Samuel, Finnegan, and Joseph Gallagher.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband Robert Houk Jr.

Services: Saturday, April 2, 2016, at the Trinity Episcopal Parish.

Cemetery: Waterloo Cemetery.

Memorials: May be directed to Trinity Episcopal Parish or The Grout Museum in Waterloo, IA. the Iowa Chapter of the American Heart Association.
