Biography--

Richard Beaumont Birkett, 93, of Waterloo, died at his residence on Monday, March 14, 2016. In excellent health until one month ago, he chose to enter hospice instead of pursuing surgical treatment for aortic stenosis.

Richard was born December 27, 1922, on a farm in Wisconsin that has been owned by his family since 1846. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1944 to’46 in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre during World War II, and then returned to college at the University of Wisconsin, graduating in 1947 with a degree in Civil Engineering. The day after graduating, he married Jean Sargent.

After Jean died in 1955, he married Myra Mosby. He worked for the Illinois Central Railroad for his entire career. He was an avid reader, particularly about American and world history.

He is survived by four children: Martha (John) Bordwell of Minneapolis, Thomas of Washington D.C., David of Boston, and Lisa (David) Fichter of Voorhies; four grandchildren: Lucas (Yena), Clara, Kristy (Joe), and Ben; one great-grandchild, Abigail; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his two wives, he was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Jessy Birkett; four brothers: James, William, Robert, and John; and a sister, Nancy Van Hala.

Memorials can be directed to Honor Flights of Iowa, to Cedar Valley Hospice or to the Rochester Cemetery (West Main Street, Burlington, WI, 53105).
