John Duane Stalberger

November 24, 1926 - March 23, 2016

John Duane Stalberger, 89, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, died Wednesday, March 23, 2016, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, Iowa.

He was born November 24, 1926 in St. Cloud, Minnesota, the son of Gerhard and Anna (Wuertz) Stalberger. John married Shirley Hemberger on May 3, 1952 in St. Cloud. She preceded him in death on March 14, 1975.

John graduated from Cathedral High School in St. Cloud and attended St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and worked at the University of Northern Iowa for many years, retiring as the Assistant Director of Security in 1988. He was a former member of Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. John’s pastimes included his love of golf and gardening.

He is survived by his three sons, William (Becky) Stalberger of Riverside, California, Richard Stalberger of Dike, Iowa and Robert (Marianne) Stalberger of Decorah, Iowa; his two daughters, Beverly Stalberger of New Brighton, Minnesota and Janet (Dean) Pedersen of Cedar Falls; six grandchildren, Courtney (Isaiah) Ball, Tyler Pedersen, Allison, Jackson, Martin and Shelby Stalberger; two great grandchildren, Kingston and Braxton Ball, and two sisters, Verna Zekan of Charleston, West Virginia and Ethel Belle of Margate, Florida.

John was preceded in death by his wife and parents, three brothers, Ken, Ralph and Jerry Stalberger, and two sisters, Leora Gross and Joan McCallum.

Services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 28, 2016, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with burial at Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Military honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Visitation will be one hour before service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the church or Cedar Valley Hospice.
