Elsie May Gehrke (1920-2016)

CEDAR FALLS, IOWA – Elsie May Gehrke, 95, of Cedar Falls, died Thursday, March 17, 2016 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.

She was born May 6, 1920, in Hudson, Iowa, daughter of Sophus and Marie Christensen Hermansen. She married Bernard Gehrke on May 18, 1941 in Fredsville, Iowa. He died July 11, 2008

She graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1937 and worked at a dress shop in Vinton in addition to being a homemaker and farmwife. She was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls.

She is survived by a son, Jerry Gehrke of Vashon, WA; a daughter, Joann (Bruce) Wingert of Cedar Falls; ten grandchildren: Janie (Perry) Unruh, Jenifer Henke, Jeff (Julissa) Gehrke, Todd (Angela) Gehrke, Sarah (Leloncé) Mims, Malinda (Alex) Gehrke, April (Chris) Parkhurst, Brian (Samantha) Wingert, Jessica (Andrew) Schoof, and Brooke Gehrke; twelve great-grandchildren: Ryan, Ethan and Callie Parkhurst, Elin Wingert, Patrick and Taylor Gehrke, Hannah and Ryan Gehrke, Jennah and David Price, Veronica Sablin, Christopher Mims, and two more on the way; and a sister, Gladys Jungling of Holland, MI.

Preceded in death by: a son, David Gehrke; a grandson, Michael Gehrke; two sisters, Mildred Arends, Helen Jensen; and a brother, Stanley Hermansen.

Services: Wednesday in the Chapel at Nazareth Lutheran Church. Burial in Fredsville Lutheran Cemetery, rural Cedar Falls. Visitation on Tuesday at Richardson Funeral Service, Cedar Falls.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or the Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging’s meal program and bingo held at the Cedar Falls Community Center (NEI3A, 2101 Kimball Ave, Ste 320, Waterloo, IA 50702, Attn: Mike Isaacson).
