Biography--

Elma R. Tyson-Hurst, 86, of Waterloo, Iowa, made her transition to be with the Lord on February 12, 2016 at Rosewood Estate in Waterloo.

Elma was born on April 14, 1929 in Newton, Iowa, the daughter of Glen R. and Edith Lavina (Moore) Rogers. Elma was a lifelong resident of Waterloo. She graduated high school from Waterloo East High in 1948.

Elma was united in marriage to John Tyson in 1948 and from that union she gave birth to three beautiful children. John preceded her in death in 1996. Elma married Donald Hurst in 2012.

She worked in the fashion industry for Black’s department store and later for Donaldson’s department store, retiring after 40 years. Elma had a passion for drawing, creating beautiful human figures with intricate detail. She had dreams of being a fashion designer which showed in the many years she worked in fashion sales.

She is survived by her husband, Donald; two sons, Robert (Miriam) Tyson of Waterloo and Bryon (Rexie) Tyson of Milan, IL; a daughter, Sandra Burke of Long Beach, Ca; three step-sons, Jim Hurst of Denver, Steve Hurst and Brett Hurst of Waterloo; two stepdaughters, Sandra Alexanders of Waterloo and Cheryl Welloughby of Savanna, GA; six grandchildren; Aunjeannette Brown, Bengie Tyson, Bryan (Monica) Tyson, Christopher David Carroll; Billie Angelique Carroll and Adam Joseph Burke; Elma is also survived by six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Mark (Shirley) Rogers of Waterloo and Charles E. (Billie) Rogers of Branson, MO; a sister, Nyra Carlson of Grimes, IA; many nieces and nephews; and her dog, Lolo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Tyson; and a brother, Lee Rogers.

The family would like to give a very special thank you to the staff of Rosewood Estate, UnityPoint Hospice of Waterloo, the Prayer Warriors, Dorothy Hodges Hutchinson, and to all that contributed to Elma’s wonderful care.

Elma (Mom) will be greatly missed, but we as a family now that she is in God’s hands.

Celebration of Life services: Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at Locke Funeral Home

Visitation:
One hour prior to the service on Tuesday until service time at Locke Funeral Home

Cemetery: (none given)

Memorials:
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Jubilee United Methodist Church food pantry in Waterloo, Iowa.
