Biography--

Elvin C. Johnson, Jr., 84, of Waterloo, died at his home Thursday, February 4, 2016.

Elvin was born July 3, 1931 in Waterloo, Iowa the son of Elvin Clarence and Helena Minnie (Hanke) Johnson, Sr. He graduated from West High School in 1949.

Elvin married Sunny J. Shadman January 29, 1950 in Waterloo. She died February 12, 1994. He spent summers working on his Aunt and Uncle’s farm in Britt. After he was married he worked as a herdsman on a farm in Jesup. He then worked for Rath Packing Company for 7 years and then retired from Iowa Public Service after 32 years as an LNG shift operator in 1992.

He was a member of Trinity American Lutheran Church where he sang in the choir, was a deacon for many years, and Assisting Minister for 10 years. Elvin volunteered at Allen Hospital as a patient escort for 5 years. His love of farming began when he spent summers with his aunt and uncle. He also enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing. Most of all he loved God, Church, and his family. Elvin was a quiet and gentle man, though he possessed a level of determination.

He was also very giving. Elvin was a perfectionist; you may have witnessed this in his taxidermy, or his home that he built and finished while in his early 60’s. As a family they enjoyed spending time at the cabin in Canada and fishing on Jackfish Lake. He enjoyed bowling on leagues when he was younger and was a dedicated blood donor.

Elvin is survived by a son Elvin C. Johnson III and his wife Kathie of Waterloo, a daughter Mara Dudley and her husband Scott of Llano, Texas; 5 grandchildren: Elvin C. (Lesley) Johnson IV; Jeff (Wendy) Smith; Kelly (Abby) Smith; Sarah Dudley; and Nathan Dudley; 10 great‑grandchildren; 1 great‑great grandson; and a special friend Phyllis Baethke of Waterloo.

Elvin is preceded in death by his parents, Elvin and Helena; his wife Sunny; a son, Arlen Johnson; and three brothers: LaDon Liscum, Kenneth Liscum and Ronald Johnson.
