Biography--

Mary V. King, 82, of Friendship Village died at Friendship Village Health Center on Wednesday, January 27, 2016.

Mary was born June 25, 1933, in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Theodore and Grace Exter Van Abbema. Mary grew up in Chicago and met Dick while a student at Iowa State. She married Richard L. "Dick" King on September 3, 1954 in Chicago; he died February 21, 2012.

Mary received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Iowa State University and was an elementary school art teacher in the Waterloo Public Schools until retiring in 1995.

She was a member of Waterloo First United Methodist Church, P.E.O., Spokes-R-Us, and was active in tennis, bicycling, reading, art, calligraphy, and was an ice skating instructor at the Waterloo Hippodrome Auditorium.

Survivors include three sons: David (DeMaris) King of Prospect, KY, Jerry (Sheri) King of Scottsdale, AZ and Paul (Jennifer) King of Palatine, IL; seven grandchildren: Matthew (Brittnay) and Aaron King, Ashleigh (Devin) Allen, James (Joanna) and Joseph King, Andrew and Erica King; and five great-grandchildren: Alex, Raine, Judah, Adeline and Carson.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dick; and a sister, Helen Van Abbema.

Saturday, January 30, at Waterloo First United Methodist Church, 614 Randolph Street
